Intro Python for the humanities

Exploring MoMA datasets in

Python has been one of the most popular programming languages for the past 20 years. Today it is a key language for data analysis in a huge number of fields, including many in the social sciences and humanities.

This introductory workshop will walk you through the basics of programming in Python. You will be introduced to the main language features of Python, including: variables and data types, conditionals, lists, for/while loops, list comprehensions, and dictionaries. You will also learn how to write your own functions, and how to work with and plot tabular data. The workshop will give you lots of opportunities for hands-on practice; instead of covering these topics in a dry and abstract fashion, we will play with datasets from the Museum of Modern Art and discuss concepts as we go.
